Shampoo Recommendations

We receive many questions from customers asking for shampoo bar
recommendations for specific hair types.
Most often, our reply to these e-mails goes like this . . .

We wish that we could recommend the perfect shampoo bar for each individual hair type, but everyone's hair and scalp are so unique. The shampoo bars behave differently for different people.  I have customers with oily hair who prefer bars that I would normally recommend for dry hair and vice versa.

Many soapmakers use one soap or shampoo recipe and simply change the scents.  We recognize that everyone's hair is different. For that reason every one of our shampoo bars is made from a different recipe.  Your favorite bar of soap in the summer may differ from your favorite winter soap.  Lather, texture, and the feel on your skin may vary with each soap.

Our best suggestion is to try some different samples.  With a wide variety of recipes and essential oil blends, trying samples is the best way to find soaps and shampoos that are just right for you.  Use them one at a time so that you can really judge how they make your hair and scalp feel.  I often tell customers to take notes on what they like or don't like about each soap or shampoo bar.

We really do wish that we could recommend the perfect shampoo bar
for each individual hair type.
But the fact remains that everyone's hair and scalp are unique.

Lori in Michigan who wrote Three Sisters and a Friend: Adventures with All Natural Shampoo Bars,
had this to say about our "standard" reply:

"When I first emailed you about shampoo bar recommendations, I really wanted you to tell me which shampoo bars I should use.  Instead I got the “everyone’s hair is unique” story which was not very helpful at the time.  But now I understand why that is the perfect answer.  Everyone’s hair IS unique (even two sisters living in the same city with the same type of hair).  So I guess the moral of the story is that if you want to switch to an all natural shampoo product—just do it!  Buy samples because all of the bars are very different.  It is well worth the effort and besides experimenting can be fun!"

Each of our shampoo bar selections contains a different blend
of natural plant oils, essential oils, and herb infused oils.
No two recipes are the same.

We have compiled recommendations based on information gathered
from friends, family, and customers.  Hopefully this will help you make your choices!
We appreciate all of the feedback from our customers.

You will notice product overlaps in the recommendations. One person's dry hair shampoo is another's oily hair shampoo.  That is why it is so difficult to make individual recommendations!

Oily Hair

Oily scalp is the result of excessive secretions of sebum.  Oily hair is often made worse by using "drying" shampoos.   Drying out the scalp simply encourages the oil glands to produce more oil.

Shampoos containing citrus essential oils
are great for oily scalp.

Recommendations:

Chamomile & Citrus
Summer Sunshine
Mud & Clay
Babassu & Marsh Mallow
Nettle
Olive & Babassu

"I have had oily hair (I guess its really my scalp) all of my life.  I have tried so many shampoos but no matter what type of shampoo I tried I still had to shampoo at least once a day.  All of this shampooing has made my hair dry and full of static.  To help the dry length I had to use lots of conditioner which made my hair flat and if I took a morning shower, my hair was often greasy by evening.  I have been using your Chamomile and Citrus shampoo bar for months.  I love it and my hair loves it!  I still have to shampoo everyday, but now my hair is moisturized and soft.  My fine hair even has body!  I sometimes need a bit of conditioner for the tangles, but now I can use a tiny bit so my hair does not feel heavy and I never need a second washing if I am going out in the evening.  I decided to try the Summer Sunshine because you said that it was also a pretty light shampoo and so far so good with that one too!  Please NEVER stop making these wonderful shampoos!"           Sara, California

Dry Hair

Dry hair is often the result of a decrease in sebum production, the natural skin oil necessary to keep the scalp and hair moist and lubricated.  Dry hair lacks the oil and moisture it needs to give it sheen and a soft texture. As a result, hair that's dry will be brittle and dull and have a straw-like texture.

Some possible causes of dry hair…

  • Genetics (we always blame the parents!!)

  • Excessive washing, harsh detergent shampoos, or alcohol-based hair products, excessive blow-drying

  • Over-processing

  • Environmental dryness--your climate

  • Exposure to sun, wind and chlorinated swimming pools

  • Nutrition

  • Of course...as we age hair dryness increases, just like with our skin

Recommendations:

Carrot Milk & Honey
Rosemary Mint
Honey Beer & Egg
Mud & Clay
Lavender Spice
Babassu Marsh Mallow
Olive & Babassu

NOTE
: Many customers with dry hair, have great results using our regular soaps on their hair.  The soaps are superfatted at a higher range than shampoo bars, meaning that there is more free oil left over to moisturize dry ends.

"I have used the Honey Butter (my favorite of your entire line!), Chamomile and Calendula, and Cucumber Lime soaps, all as shampoo with great results.  My hair is very dry and frizzy, but I must wash every day because of the 'angry scalp' issues I mentioned.  The soaps are really moisturizing, and act more like a gently cleansing conditioner than a soap/shampoo bar."     Lynda,  Missouri

Dandruff

Dandruff remains a mysterious problem.  There is no commonly agreed upon theory about what actually causes dandruff.  It is estimated that as much as 97% of the population of the United States will at some point in their lives have some form of dandruff.

Dry scalp can cause flakes, but dry scalp and dandruff are not the same thing.  Dry scalp is caused by a lack of moisture or natural oils on the scalp, which results in small, dry flakes, and itchiness.   Often, switching to an all natural shampoo without drying synthetic additives may help this type of “dandruff.”   See recommendations for DRY HAIR!

In a normal scalp, the process of sloughing off old skin cells and making new cells is a very orderly process.  In the dandruff scalp, dead skin cells shred at an excessive rate.  These cells are shed in clumps, which are big enough to be seen with the naked eye and cause the embarrassing flakes.

The true dandruff, that is not simply dry scalp, is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis.  The scalp may be red and feel irritated and itchy.  We know that true dandruff is not the result of a "dry scalp", because people with oily scalps tend to suffer the most.  Dandruff is often seasonal—it is most severe during the winter and mildest during the summer.  Hormones may play a roll in dandruff and since it runs in families—genetics may also be a factor.

No matter which type of dandruff you have, it is important to use the mildest shampoo possible.  Although detergent based shampoos will clean the hair and scalp well, they often cause over-drying which will make the condition worse.

"I am still loving your soaps and shampoo bars!  A couple of weeks ago, I foolishly decided to try my liquid shampoo again.  Boy, did I regret it!  I got out of the shower with my head burning and itching.  My scalp started flaking up immediately.  After three hours, I couldn't stand it anymore, so I hopped back in the shower to massage some of the lather from my shampoo bar into my scalp and rinse it back out.  Problem solved!  I will not do that again! .

I am just glad to have found something that doesn't aggravate my head.  I've had, burning, itching scalp when I get out of the shower for as long as I can remember.  I figured I was just allergic to whatever was in shampoo and conditioner.  Even prescription shampoos didn't help. It's a relief not to go through my day thinking about scraping my nails across my scalp every chance I get.  Thank you very much!"         Marissa,  Tennessee

Hair Loss

There are many causes of true hair loss, such as genetics, general health, medications, hormonal changes, etc., that no hair care product can reverse.

Everyone sheds hair!  The hairs on an adult scalp do not grow or shed in unison.  The growing and shedding of hair happens at random, but individual hair follicles do have their own pattern.  If all of the hair follicles on your head were on the same schedule, we would all go temporarily bald from time to time as we shed to make room for new hair growth.

Excess shedding is often the result of simply mistreating your hair!
Often switching to an all natural shampoo without detergents, detergent foam boosters, and other harsh chemicals may help with shedding.

We put a lot of care and research in to our recipes, but I believe that what IS NOT in our shampoo bars is even more beneficial to people with hair and scalp problems, than what IS in them.  With all the synthetic ingredients in commercial shampoos, specialty shampoos, and even some handmade shampoos, it is no wonder that so many people have problems with their hair and scalp.

Check your current shampoo!   Does it contain ingredients like Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)?  Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) was developed to clean grease off of automotive garage floors!  Our scalp and hair were never meant to be exposed to ingredients like this.  We do not use any synthetic chemicals in our shampoo bars!

"I have been using nothing but your soaps or shampoo bars followed by a vinegar rinse for the last six months and my hair is in such good health now I can hardly believe it.  My hair has never been soft before but now it is.  And it's shiny and smooth too. Your soaps have made me love my hair and I used to hate it for many, many years!  Thank you so much!

I would also like to add that my shedding has decreased very much.  I used to shed a lot every day.  My hair feels a lot thicker!  It's so great.  I lather and rinse three times, and then use a vinegar rinse.  This washing routine, combined with only using aloe vera gel and vegetable and essential oils on my hair has worked better than any expensive salon product I have ever tried."       Maria,  Norway

Hair that is Limp and needs Body

Limp hair lacks vitality, bounce and body.

Some possible causes of limp and lifeless hair…

  • Genetics

  • Harsh detergent shampoos

  • Over-processing

  • Heavy conditioners and styling products can coat the hair shaft and weigh the hair down

  • Nutrition

  • As we age our hair changes

*Mineral rich kelp adds protection to the surface of hair, reducing moisture loss and infusing it with vitamins.  The kelp proteins seem to strengthen roots, add body and shine and condition the scalp and hair.

"I read on your website that customers say the Honey Beer and Egg shampoo adds volume to their hair.  This I have noticed also, and I have very very fine textured hair.  I have tried all sorts of expensive professional salon products that claim to add volume with no luck at all.  After a couple months of using your shampoos bar, I look like I have thick hair.  I don't even have to try to pump up the volume of my hair midday.  It looks full all day long.  I just really wanted to let you know how much I love your products.  They are truly the best beauty products I have ever bought in my whole life."     Cassie,  Indiana
