100% Olive Oil Castile

Castile soaps were first produced in the Castile
region of
Spain in the 13th century
True Castile soap uses 100% olive oil as the only soap making oil.

Over time, the term "castile soap" has been used to include
any soap with at least 40 percent Olive oil.
While our Castile soap may not be made in Castile Spain,
it is 100% Pure Olive Oil.

Why do many soapmakers make Castile-like soap
and not 100% true Castile?

First of all, gentle olive oil soap produces small, creamy, slippery bubbles, not a frothy, bubbly lather.  Lather is one of the criteria that customers use to rate a good soap.  As a result, many soapmakers add coconut oil to increase the bubbly lather.  (That is also why commercial companies add sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) and other synthetic foaming agents.)

Secondly, 100% olive oil soaps have so much natural glycerin that the lather can be somewhat slippery or slimy feeling.  Soapmakers add other oils, like palm, to Castile-like soaps to decrease the slip in olive oil soap.  Read the ingredients on your bar of "true" Castile!

Why Does Chagrin Valley Soap make TRUE CASTILE soap?

We believe our customers should have the choice!

Pure Castile soap is as mild as they come.  It is a favorite with those whose very sensitive skin find palm oil or coconut oil soaps too drying, but still require a bar that cleans thoroughly. This soap is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.  It is often used for eczema, psoriasis, and delicate baby skin.

The extra natural glycerin is what makes true Castile such a great soap for dry and sensitive skin.  Olive oil will help moisturize dry skin while controlling oily skin.  It is a humectant, attracting moisture to your skin while allowing it to breathe naturally.  True Castile will clean your skin and leave it feeling surprisingly soft.

The “slip” resulting from the abundant glycerin makes this a fabulous shaving bar, especially for legs.  Rub the bar on your legs and watch the razor glide along for smooth, soft, clean shaven  legs.  Olive oil lathers quickly with plenty of rich, tiny, creamy bubbles and produces a very hard soap that is exceptionally mild and long lasting.  Castile soap ages well, becoming harder with time, but it is very important that you keep this soap well drained.
