Wine Bottle Stoppers:
The Process

It all begins here, in this corner of Howard's woodshop!
E
ach wine bottle stopper starts out as a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" block of wood.
A hole is drilled in one end to accept the dowel that holds the silicon stopper.

Roughing out a blank
The block is turned to a cylinder while it is spinning at about 2000 rpm and held between the headstock of the lathe (the left side that is powered by the motor) and the tail stock (the right side).

Rough shaping
Then, the fun begins!  Using gouges and
skew chisels, I shape the wine bottle stopper.

Final Shaping
When I am satisfied with the shape, the piece is sanded, while spinning, with increasingly finer grits of sandpaper until it is as smooth as a baby’s behind.

Polishing
Then, a fast-drying, high gloss shellac
and wax finish is applied, again while
the stopper is spinning at 2000 rpm.

Finished on the lathe
The shaped and finished wood is removed from the lathe and the dowel and silicon stopper are glued into the hole previously drilled.
Block of wood to finished product!
Voila!  Finished!
